Biography

Barry John Raybould, MA. is an award-winning artist who works primarily in oils. He seeks to convey the mood and atmosphere of natural landscapes and people using a contemporary fusion of impressionistic and expressionistic elements. A key characteristic of Raybould’s work is his integration of color, design and brushwork to convey a strong sense of mood and feeling in his work.

Barry John Raybould

Originally from England, Raybould lived in the United States for many years and painted in California where he was one of the Central Coast artists known as the 'Informalists'. He now spends a lot of time in his studios in Tuscany and China and travels the world to paint. His main influences include the British painter JMW Turner, Corot, Monet, Sorolla, as well as the early California Impressionists and colorists such as Franz Bischoff, Edgar Payne, William Ritschel, Joseph Kleitsch, and Guy Rose, the Society of Six, and the Canadian landscapists known as the Group of Seven.

Raybould is an artist member of the prestigious California Art Club, one of the oldest professional art organizations in the country founded by Franz Bischoff and William Wendt. He is also a member of the Carmel Art Association, the second oldest art association in the United States, an associate member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, the Oil Painters of America, and the American Impressionist Society.

His work has been exhibited in the Monterey Museum of Art and in the California Art Club's Gold Medal Exhibition in the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA),  and is held in many private collections worldwide. His work has won many awards in juried shows and in museum shows.

Raybould is the author of the Virtual Art Academy® program of art instruction for painters, and has studied with several of today's great contemporary masters including Cedric Egeli, David Leffel, Jove Wang, Ovanes Berberian, and Daniel Sprick. He is the author of regular columns for the International Artist and Plein Air Magazines. His works have appeared in numerous publications on art.
