Arts for the Parks Gold Medal Winner, 2007

Barry John Raybould, MA. is an award-winning plein air artist on the central coast of California. He seeks to convey the mood and atmosphere of natural landscapes using a contemporary fusion of impressionistic and expressionistic elements. A key characteristic of Raybould’s work is his integration of color, design and brushwork to convey a strong sense of mood and feeling in his work.

Originally from England, Raybould divides his time between his studios in Pacific Grove California, Venice Italy, and Tuscany Italy, where he paints his plein air paintings. His main influences include the British painter JMW Turner, Corot, Monet, Sorolla, as well as the early California Impressionists and colorists such as Franz Bischoff, Edgar Payne, William Ritschel, Joseph Kleitsch, and Guy Rose, the Society of Six, and the Canadian landscapists known as the Group of Seven.

Raybould is an artist member of the prestigious California Art Club, one of the oldest professional art organizations in the country founded by Franz Bischoff and William Wendt. He is also a member of the Carmel Art Association, the second oldest art association in the United States, an associate member of the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, the Oil Painters of America, and the American Impressionist Society.

His work has been exhibited in the Monterey Museum of Art and in the California Art Club's Gold Medal Exhibition in the Pasadena Museum of California Art (PMCA),  and is held in many private collections worldwide. In recent years he has won a total of four awards in the prestigious Carmel Art Festival Plein Air competition, including two medal awards for second and third place overall in the competition. More recently he won the top award in the Telluride plein air competition in Colorado.

Raybould is also the Educational Director and Chairman of the Virtual Art Academy®, a publisher of online self study art tutorials for both artists and collectors. Raybould's own studies have been augmented with time spent with several of today's great contemporary masters including Cedric Egeli, David Leffel, Jove Wang, Ovanes Berberian, and Daniel Sprick.
