What is different about these workshops?
These workshops have been designed for students who are interested in the Virtual Art Academy® course curriculum. The Virtual Art Academy program is a series of self-study courses for artists of all levels. If you have already taken some of the self-study courses, the instructor-led workshops will reinforce the material you have already seen. If you have not yet taken any of the self-study courses, then you can do the workshop first and then use the self-study couses when you get back home to further reinfoce the workshop.
What level are the workshops for?
The workshops are for both serious beginners as well as intermediate and advanced students. Absolute beginners are welcome (as long as you are prepared to work hard and are serious about learning how to paint well - these workshops will require some work).
What material will be covered?
In these workshops we will review the alla prima or plein air painting process and then focus on specific course topics in the Virtual Art Academy® curriculum. If you are a beginner, then we will make sure you get the basics covered during the workshop. At the beginning of each workshop Barry will help you identify exactly where you need to focus your efforts during the week in order to make the fastest progress. During the workshop we will focus on these weak areas in order to get your painting to the next level.
What is the workshop schedule?
The workshop will consist of four hours of formal tuition per day which will take place during the morning hours. In the afternoons you will be free to work on your own paintings, do some sightseeing, or watch Barry at work. This is an invaluable opportunity to observe Barry's process of creation as it actually happens, rather than watching a "canned" presentation. Barry will actually be searching for ideas and creating artwork for his galleries.
The schedule for week one of the Tuscany and China workshop is as follows:
8:30 to 10:00 Lecture on the topic for the day and critique of previous days work.
10:00 - 12:30 Painting and Quick Studies with personal guidance and advice from Barry.
Afternoon: free time for working on your own artwork, sightseeing, or watching Barry at work. We recommend you work on consolidating the information you learned in the morning during this free time, in preparation for the next day of the workshop.
The schedule for week two of the China workshop is as follows:
8:30 to 4:30 Painting from the model at the Linden Art Center.
Tuesday & Thursday 8:30 - 12:30: Barry will give two checkpoint critiques of your work to make sure you are on track with the lessons you learned in the first week.
Will there be any walking involved?
Yes, there will be some walking when painting in the small villages, but in the countryside we will generally be near our vehicles. There is a lot of great information on how to make your equipment very light in the Virtual Art Academy® course unit: Getting Organized Outdoors
What medium can I use?
You can use any medium since we will be covering the principles of painting and the medium is not so important. I will be using oil paints myself, but you can use acrylics, aklyds, or watercolors if you wish.
What past students have said ?
"John and I love being at Barry's workshops and have learned so very much from him. Barry is by far the best teacher that I personally have had in many years of study. We both would make the trip just for his lectures. " Lynn B., Atherton
"Although I am a professional painter with many, many years of experience I was inspired in the BJR painting workshop. Barry is a fine artist, is well organized, and is a dedicated teacher.” Ann W., Carmel"Barry clarified and simplified the elements of plein air painting so well in his 3-day workshop that I felt I had made a year's worth of progress!" Pati S., Pebble Beach
"I've been a painter most of my life and have a BFA. Barry's workshops have been enormously helpful in enabling me to break through to another level and finally solve chronic, frustrating problems in my work. His clear, straightforward and objective instruction cuts to the chase and facilitates rapid progress. I am a much stronger painter than I was when I started working with Barry." Peggy B., Santa Cruz
"Watching Barry paint was unlike anything I've seen before- very inspiring. He has a unique mix of meticulous planning and spontaneity. I was so inspired that I had to paint "the new way" one more time before leaving the area. Thanks Barry. " Lisa M., Point Mugu
"Truly completely welcoming to painters at all levels. Well-paced, wonderful teaching, great mix of time to paint and time to learn together." Judy L., Pebble Beach
"Compared with other instruction I have had, Barry's instruction was more comprehensive, clearer, more concise. He concentrated on teaching more than demonstrations, which was much more helpful. Barry 's publications are explicit and so enlightening. I think Barry has done a wonderful job with both his workshops and his publications, bringing his experience into each. Both are much more intense and comprehensive than most workshops and publications. " Linda L, Carmel Valley, CA
"I appreciate Barry’s dedication to clear, practical teaching and am looking forward to a big dose. I still share about the huge difference in my painting immediately following Barry’s workshop. I’m so grateful that he does not sacrifice real learning/improvement to save feelings. Artists get plenty of encouragement from families and buyers. A trained and *honest* artistic eye is rare and valuable. Thanks." Elisabeth M, Sardinia, Italy

The area we have chosen is the countryside in and around Montepulciano, one of the most beautiful old hill towns in the heart of Tuscany. Montepulciano is famous for its Vino Nobile wine as well as the wonderful Renaissance buildings and squares. It is central to the major centers of Florence, Siena and Assisi, and many other famous Tuscan villages that are overflowing with subject matter for our work. It is also very close to other charming hill towns in Tuscany, (Pienza, where the English Patient was filmed, Cortona, Radicofani and San Quirico) and in the midst of unspoiled countryside that is much like it was 400 years ago. We recommend the Eyewitness Travel Guide on Florence & Tuscany, for more information and photographs of the area.

The most important thing is to make sure you have a large palette 18in x 24in, 45cm x 60cm. This is the most common problem beginners have with their equipment. Also make sure you have a secure way of fixing it to your easel with a clamp so that it does not blow away in the wind.
Bring the following materials (see Resources for a list of where I get my supplies):
Suggested palette Bring whatever paints you are used to using but make sure you have at least these colors: (oil or acrylic are both okay, but oil is preferred. If you are a watercolor artist then just bring whatever you normally use.)Natural bristle (hogs hair) filbert brushes #4, 6, 8, and 10
Panels of the following sizes (any type of painting support is okay, such as gessoed hardboard, gessoed masonite, canvas panel, or stretched canvas is okay):

Bring with you. On the first morning, bring with you:
